It’s been a while since
Gears of War hit stores, and I have a few things I need to get off my chest now that I’ve played it more.
First back to the single player, despite this post’s title. It’s a great game, but replayablity is low because enemies always appear in the same spots, no matter how often you play the levels. Play something often enough and you’ll memorize where to shoot and how many enemies you can expect.
The only reasons to play through the single player again are 1) achievements for higher difficulty levels, 2) achievements for playing Dom in co-op, and 3) finding all the COG tags.
As for the multiplayer aspects… you only have deathmatch games in three variations; protect the leader (a.k.a. assasination) and two regular deathmatch games, where one give you the ability to revive yourself when you’re shot but not killed by headshot, chainsaw or curbstomp.
While fun when you’re in a team that communicates, it’s boring and annoying when you’ve got team mates who don’t talk or steal your kills. But even with a great team, it gets boring to run around doing the same thing every single time.
The maps are generally quite good, with plenty of spots for taking cover, and always at least one way to (try to) flank your enemies, but as always there is one map most people I played with don’t appreciate; rooftops.
Personally, I’m pretty much done playing Gears of War multiplayer games. Even though I probably will attempt to finish the singleplayer on hardcore, that won’t happen in the near future as I received my copy of
Rainbow Six: Vegas this morning, and that game’s multiplayer (based on my experiences with the demo, available on Xbox Live Marketplace) is far more solid. Plus I haven’t finished the
F.E.A.R. singleplayer yet, though more on that game in a future post.
